Thanks to the Connestee Quilters, the Transylvania County Animal Shelter’s cat room has been spruced up with the addition of several dozen handmade quilts. Members of The Connestee Quilt Guild, which has been meeting since the early 1990s, stitched and sewed beautiful, custom made quilts for the cat shelves. In addition to sharing quilting tips, ideas and projects at monthly meetings, they do at least one community project each year. The Kitty Quilts for the shelter is the most recent. Some examples of past projects include quilts for the Ronald McDonald House in Greenville, quilts and totes for patients at the Brian Center in Brevard and quilts for hospice patients.
The quilting group consisting of 15 members contacted Friends of Transylvania Animals (FOTAS) about the project in early May. This project, conceived by new Connestee resident Patti Stevens, provides nervous cats with a bit of security during their stay. Stevens said “the Connestee Quilters had such a great time with our Kitty Quilt Project. We have completed 65 quilts and members took home additional supplies to keep on quiltin’”.
“The ladies’ efforts have made this project an incredible success,” said new shelter director, Elma Rae Greene. The quilts provide physical and psychological comfort to the animals awaiting new homes. In most instances the animals are kept in areas with stainless steel braces and hard plastic flooring. Now, the quilts give the felines a comfortable, warm place to rest while waiting for that special adoption.
The Shelter and FOTAS send a big “thank you” to the quilters for their generosity and invite other groups to visit the shelter. Transylvania County Animal Shelter is located at 1124 Old Rosman Highway. For those who would like to see the quilters’ handwork in person, the shelter is open Tuesday-Friday: 10 am – 5:30 pm, Saturday 10 am – 4 pm and are closed on Sunday & Monday.
